During in the Cardassian occupation of Bajor Battes fought in the Bajoran Resistance, leaving his face scarred. Following the Cardassian withdrawal Battes joined the Bajoran Militia and by 2370 Battes was stationed on Deep Space 9 working as a security officer. In that year he along with Gaysd Tel and Miles O'Brien attempted to guard one of the stations weapon tail towers from rampaging hungry juvenile Horta. Unfortunately despite heavy phaser bombardment from the group the Horta persisted and broke past to consume DS9's defences. (DS9 novel: Devil in the Sky)
