Matazidah Bancanor (pronounced mah-TAH-zee-day BAN-kan-ohr), nicknamed Matazi (mah-TAH-zee) was born in Bihan to a lower class family. She married into House Bancanor, a wealthy banking and goldsmithing family based in Kugisko, Namorn.

Matazi is an extremely beautiful woman. As she is Bihani (or Bihanese), she has light brown skin, described as the color of coffee well lightened with cream and handfuls of dark crinkly hair. Her eyes are large and dark, over a slim nose. She has passed her looks onto her twin daughters, Jory and Nia. It is unknown exactly what her other two children look like.

Matazi is a very warm person, and a loving mother. She takes news quite calmly—such as the magic in her eldest daughters—and she has a very gentle, but strong, presence. She mothers Daja, and she is very kind. She is also not snobbish in the least, about her husband's money, or her beauty. She does not use her beauty to gain power, but just wears it as if it isn't even there. This makes her even more beautiful, in the eyes of Daja.
