Bio:
After Rhaenyra Targaryen was born, her mother Aemma Arryn went on to give birth to one child who died in the cradle, two still births, and two miscarriages - five failed attempts at producing a healthy male heir in ten years. Rhaenyra feared for her mother's health with this, her seventh pregnancy, but Aemma insisted it was her duty to the realm. Privately, Aemma told her husband King Viserys that if her current pregnancy failed she did not want to try again, as she could not bear to mourn another dead child.[1]
With Baelon's birth imminent, a grand tourney called the "Heir's Tournament" is held in King's Landing. The labor proves to be difficult, however, and Grand Maester Mellos informs Viserys that the only way to save the child is to cut into Aemma's womb and pull him out. He reluctantly agrees to the procedure, which ultimately ends up killing Aemma. Viserys names the child after his own father, Baelon. After only a few hours, Baelon dies as well. He is cremated alongside his mother by Syrax's flames.[1]
Whilst hosting officers of the City Watch at a brothel on the Street of Silk, Daemon toasts Baelon as the "Heir for a Day." After hearing of this from Otto Hightower, and considering the fact that Daemon spent time with his cronies rather than his family after the funeral, Viserys banishes Daemon back to Runestone. He later names his daughter Rhaenyra heir to the Iron Throne.[1]
