Bern was a member of the Silvers of White Gryphon. A master scout, he taught tracking skills to the new recruits. When Tadrith and Silverblade disappeared in the rainforest on their way to Outpost Five, Bern was assigned to the same search party as Skandranon and Amberdrake.

After Regin, the leader of the search party, was killed by the Changed wyrsa pack, Bern took over. He had been wounded in the leg during the attack, but he started the party out marching towards the river. He sent Drake and Skandranon across with a rope, which could be tied off on the opposite bank, allowing the others a way across. Unfortunately, the wyrsa attacked while Drake was in the middle of the river. By the time Skan and Drake could help, the party was gone. They had been killed, and their bodies drug off into the forest.
