Ikala is a Haighlei prince, twentieth in the line of succession behind the Crown Prince of Nbubi. Traditionally, extra sons were sent to other Haighlei kingdoms to serve as royal bodyguards, ensuring the peace between the kingdoms. Once officially allied with the Haighlei, White Gryphon joined the bodyguard rotation. Finding the rigid constraints of Haighlei culture suffocating, Ikala chose to serve in White Gryphon and join the Silver Gryphons, rather than accept the more usual bodyguard role in an imperial household.

When Tadrith and Silverblade disappeared in the rain forest on their way to Outpost Five, Ikala volunteered to join the search. Due to his knowledge of the terrain, he was put in charge of one of the search parties. When Silverblade was rescued, the two finally acknowledged their feelings for one another.
