Lanz is a junior Healer who served under Senior Healer M'laud in Urtho's armies during the Mage Wars. When he wished to know why one of his patients was being referred to Amberdrake, M'laud suggested he go ask Amberdrake himself. Drake proceeded to give him a very thorough accounting of his own training and education, leaving the young man slightly bewildered but very impressed.

Lanz is described as a "youngster--barely out of a scrawny, gawky adolescence, and not yet grown into the slender and graceful adult... he would become."
